Total Tourist And Income Are Unequal

Percentage of total foreign tourists visiting Indonesia and  incomes scores are still very unequal. Indonesia visited by about 0.7 percent of the total number of tourists in the world every year. However, only 0.08 percent of total tourist spending globally accepted. Researcher Center for Tourism Planning and Development Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Myra Gunawan P, on the sidelines of the Tourism Outlook Pre Summit Workshop in Bandung Tourism College, on Monday (9/27/2010), said the circumstances of the tourism sector in Indonesia is very alarming .

“Surely there is something wrong in the tourism sector with no berimbangnya percentage of tourists and revenues,” he said.

Based on data from the Association of Indonesian Hotels and Restaurants (PHRI), in 2009, for example, Indonesia is visited by around 7 million foreign tourists (tourists) with revenues of approximately Rp 70 trillion.

According to Myra, the possibility of lame percentage in tourist numbers was due to tourist spending in Indonesia is very low. “I suspect, foreign tourists arrived in Indonesia just because of cheaper costs. Thus, Indonesia has become a cheap tourist destination,” he said.

Low cost travel in Indonesia be an indication that, despite having competitive products, the quality of human resources (HR) field of tourism is low. In effect, HR was willing to pay cheap.

Competitive level of prices of products and services in Indonesia are of superior in the Asia Pacific region, namely the rank-3 or higher than Singapore the 27th, the 4th Malaysia, and Thailand into the 19th. However, the index of the quality of Indonesian tourism is only the 42nd, while Singapore is at the first and Malaysia’s ranking to 30th.

Another paradox in the country is, Indonesia to prioritize the tourism sector ranked 10th or higher than other countries, like Malaysia and Thailand to-23-22. However, the number of foreign tourists visiting Indonesia less.

Since 2007 until today, the global competitive index of Indonesian tourism is stagnant with the ratings have not changed, that is ranked 54th.
